Is Your Home Conducive to Safe Internet Surfing?

The first step to protecting your family is to make sure your home is conducive to safe surfing.

Computer Location – The computer(s) with Internet access should be in public areas like living, family or dining rooms.  A computer in a child or teens room is dangerous. They can visit chat rooms or adult sites with little fear of detection. They may behave in ways inappropriate because they think they cannot get caught.

Computer Video Camera – While video camera’s are fun and wonderful tools for friends and family, they can be dangerous. Cybersex is where two people with computer video camera’s watch and encourage each other to sin.  Chat rooms are filled with people who are seeking this activity. There are even web sites where the sole purpose is to engage in this kind of activity.

Time on the Internet – Does your child or teen stays on line long after you go to bed? If yes, then you are providing them ample opportunity to view or engage in sinful activity. Limit when your children can connect.

Parental Involvement – While you may not be as computer savvy as your teen that is no excuse not to become involved. Ask your teen what they do and where they go.  Do they visit chat rooms? Ask who their chatting with. Ask them to show you the chat features.  Look at their e-mail.  While the teens may think e-mail or chat sessions are private.  The law considers e-mail like a postcard, public and open to scrutiny. Monitor what the child views while on line. Check on them randomly.
